Academic Word List 3 - IELTS Vocab

This is the third group from the Academic Word Listcontaining words 120-179.

The Academic Word List is a specialized list of words that one is likely to encounter while engaging in academic situations such as listening to lectures, reading text books, or having academic conversations at the university level. It is also necessary to master this list of words in order to perform well on the IELTS and TOEFL exam. Best practice is for you to download the file below and then practice writing sentences with the words from the list. You also need to be comfortable with other forms of the words. For example, the first word on this list is the word "comments." This is the plural noun form and can be used is a sentence like this: "Many comments have been made regarding free speech." But this word can also be used as a verb, for example: "The Prime Minister has commented that he enjoyed his visit to the city." This word is not commonly used  an adjective but it is possible, "The press secretary is a commenting fool!" and this word is never used as an adverb. You should also be aware of closely related forms to this word, for instance, the word "commentator" refers to one who makes comments.


 

From this you can see that each words represents 3-4 uses. You should be familiar and able to use each of the words forms.
